COVID-19: Common Questions

Common Questions

What’s Different About COVID-19?

There’s no vaccine, no commercial antivirals. Some are infected with few or no signs. This virus can cause an acute respiratory ARDS, Several thousand are sick in Michigan, and over a half a million worldwide, causing shortages in medical resources to fight the virus. The Detroit area is one of the hardest hit.

What are the signs? What if I’m sick?

Signs of the virus are loss of taste or smell, a cough, fever, fatigue, aches and may be sore throat, congestion or rash. If you have any, seek care, testing, and self-quarantine for 14 days. More info here to help if you’re sick.

When can I go out and for what?

People may leave home for food, socially distanced exercise, health care, or as a caregiver except for critical roles in healthcare, public services, groceries, pharmacies, and to produce food, for relief aid and payroll.

When I go out, what should I do?

If you go out use social distancing and stay at least 6 feet away from others. Nose and mouth coverings like masks are now advised, but they do NOT replace social distancing. (Sneeze zone is 24 feet.)

Does my young age protect me?

No. People of all ages have been hospitalized including infants, children, and young adults. Although this seems to be less severe in many children and some young adults, it’s not always the case. People of any age with health issues are particularly vulnerable like those with asthma, chronic lung disease, lung damage (smoking & vaping), reduced immune systems, cardiac issues, hypertension, obesity, organ dysfunction, cancer, and diabetes. Even if you don’t get very sick, you can spread it to others for whom it can be serious. Many patients are ending up on ventilators or are struggling with respiratory and organ complications.
